How to Apply For a New Gas Connection: Types, Steps, Refilling & Transfers

Shifting to a new house? Getting or transferring a gas connection can be a long and tedious process. Here’s a guide to make things simpler.

T hree years after getting a new gas connection, my colleague’s cooking gas started leaking. Upon calling a technician, he recommended a new connection instead of fixing it.

Thus began a long and tedious process for her and her husband.

She posted several queries to family and friends. What she gathered from everyone’s expertise was that she had complicated a simple process, taking months where she could have got it in days.

Getting a new gas connection can seem confusing; to make things easier, follow the guide below:

Types of Gas Connection

There are two types of gas connections–public and private sector.

From the public sector, you will get a fixed number of cylinders at a subsidised rate from Indane, HP Gas and Bharat Gas. A ration card is mandatory for its procurement.

A private connection, on the other hand, just needs an address proof.

Most private or public agencies will offer two gas capacity options: 14.2 kilos and 5 kilos.

Please note: The sizes of private and public gas connections differ and so you cannot interchange the cylinders.

Applying online

If you are applying online, you can get the contact details of your nearest distributor at the beginning of the process. Once you make the payment via bank transfer, the distributor will visit your house and install the connection.

You can track the delivery with the help of your reference number provided once you pay.

Documents Required for Applying Gas Connection

For Identification Proof:

• Aadhaar Number allotment letter
• Passport
• PAN Card
• Driving License

For Address Proof:

• Ration Card
• Electricity bill from the previous three months
• Telephone bill from the previous three months
• Voter’s Identification Card
• House Rent receipt
• Employer’s Certificate

Steps to Apply for Public Connection Offline

• Locate the gas agency that supplies LPG cylinders to your area
• Visit the agency, procure the application form, and fill out all the details
• Once you have submitted the documents, you will be issued a Registration and Booking Number, along with a receipt
• You will get a Domestic Gas Consumer Card (DGCC) booklet or a passbook that records your bookings from the agency
• Depending on the agency, the security deposit for a cylinder will differ; this amount covers the cost of a cylinder, a regulator, the refilling cost for the first cylinder, a gas tube, and installation charges.

This process can take up to a month.

Please note: Only 1 LPG connection is permitted per household, so before you apply, make sure to surrender any existing connections.

LPG Connection from Private Sector

Most private agencies don’t need any documentation. Follow the procedure mentioned above. After making a deposit (which is partially refundable), you will get the connection within 24 hours.

Refilling

If you opt for a public sector connection, you can refill up to six cylinders at a subsidised rate every year. If you go beyond this number, the regular charges will be applied.

• Remember to check the seal and safety cap on the cylinder
• Remove the safety cap to check for any leakage from the valve
• Connect the cylinder with the stove and check for leakages
• Pay and procure a copy of the cash memo or voucher

Intra-City Transferring Process

• Approach your distributor with your new address proof, along with the receipt
• After verifying the details, the distributor will give you a transfer termination voucher
• Give this voucher to the new distributor in your area
• The new distributor will give you a new transfer subscription voucher and provide a new gas connection number
• Make sure the details are updated in your booklet

Please note: You will have to carry the cylinder and pressure regulator to your new residence.

Inter-City Transfer

• Surrender your cylinder and pressure regulator to your distributor
• Deposit your receipt and DGCC to the distributor, and he will give you a termination voucher for your new place. Remember to collect your deposit
• Find a new distributor and follow the usual steps to apply for a new connection
